Panama Investigates
Plot to Kill President
PANAMA - The investigations about an
assassination plot against Panamanian
President Ricardo Martinelli revealed
charges against three people involved, one
of them of Puerto Rican nationality.
The Justice Ministry mentioned in the case
two Institutional Protection Service (IPS)
members, and entity in charge of the
president's security.
They mentioned a person, original from
Puerto Rico that is accused of being the
brains behind a supposed plot to kidnap
Martinelli.
Media versions said the operation should
have been executed during a public rally,
although they did not mention a date or
place.
Auxiliary Attorney Luis Matinez is in charge
of the inquiry. He already assumed the
extension of the investigations to the
mentioned individuals.
The State Communication Secretariat revealed
that it obtained intelligence information
one week ago about the possible action that
could be brewing against the president's
security.
After those suspicions, the investigations
began, the entity revealed, when it said it
was relevant to the Justice Ministry
authorities, supported by the Judicial
Investigation Board (DIJ), to clarify this
case.
Opposition Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD)
leaders expressed their solidarity with the
investigations, as long as the information
is true.
