Two Peruvian Amazon
Leaders go Underground
LIMA - Two leaders of the main amazon
indigenous organization of Peru declared
themselves underground after a prosecutor
ordered their arrest under government
orders, according to the aborigines.
The actino president of the Interethnic
Association for the Development of the
Peruvian Jungla (Aidesep), Daysi Zapata,
confirmed the decisión of the brothers Saul
and Cervando Puerta, leaders of the
organization to go underground.
Zapata indicated the arrest warrant of the
Puertas and other leaders of Aidesep is an
official provocation and it adds to a chain
of provocations by the government, as well
as the failure of a dialogue between both
parties closed by the Executive at odds with
the organization.
Saúl y Cervando Puerta traveled to Nicaragua
last June looking for asylum, together with
Aidesep president, Alberto Pizango, after a
judge ordered his detention in a trial
opened by the government for issues related
to a big amazon indigenous protest.
Both returned last Octrober after the order
was changed for conditional freedom,
according to Zapata.
The indigenous organization claims the
annulment of a series of decrees aiming to
privatize and deliver the Amazon to
transnational corporations, passed by the
government as part of a legislative package
as an incentive for the free trade agreement
with the United States.
The Aidesep also demands the lifting of the
arrest warrant against the Puerta brothers
and other indigenous leaders, as well as
guarantees for the return of their leader
Pizango, who is still a political refugee in
Nicaragua. |
