by El Nuevo Diario and the Committee to
Protect Journalists' (CPJ) Carlos Lauría
indicate that family members of President
Daniel Ortega may be the buyers.
Ortega's opponents fear that programs
critical of the government may be taken off
the air, weakening freedom of expression.
Opposition journalist Carlos Fernando
Chamorro, who hosts two news programs on
Channel 8, is at the center of the
controversy. “We will never legitimate a
sham in this television channel now
controlled by Ortega,” Chamorro said, quoted
by the CPJ.
La Prensa newspaper is also critical of the
move, saying in an editorial that “the
governmental family is monopolizing the
media, and their intention to suppress or
limit free expression and freedom of
information is clear.”
