Taiwan Will Not Oppose
El Salvador's China Links
TAIPEI (CNA) - President Ma Ying-jeou
reiterated this week that Taiwan will not
oppose China's development of unofficial
economic and trade ties with El Salvador now
that both sides of the Taiwan Strait have
achieved reconciliation on multiple fronts.
During a meeting with Hugo Martinez, El
Salvador's minister of foreign affairs, Ma
also said that Taiwan has always maintained
good relations with El Salvador, pointing to
the concern expressed by the Central
American country following Typhoon Morakot
last August.
Ma thanked El Salvador for its endorsement
of Taiwan's bid to join the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change and
the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) by sending letters to
the organizations.
The president also expressed his gratitude
to Martinez for the warm reception he
received from El Salvador's President
Mauricio Funes when he attended Funes'
inauguration in San Salvador last May.
During their meeting in San Salvador, Funes
promised to strengthen diplomatic ties with
Taiwan, according to Ma.
In response to Funes' goodwill, Ma said that
he also told him that Taiwan will not oppose
El Salvador's interest in forging unofficial
ties with China.
Ma also pointed to economic successes in the
relationship. He said collaboration between
Taiwan and El Salvador in growing papayas
and a variety of Oriental vegetables has
borne fruit and that a bilateral free trade
pact has helped coffee exports from El
Salvador to Taiwan increase significantly.
