Honduras' New Congress
Holds First Session
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduras' new National
Congress held its first plenary session on
Monday as lawmakers vowed to reintegrate the
country into the international community
soon.
The newly elected president of Congress,
Juan Orlando Hernandez, announced the
official functioning of the new congress. He
pledged on behalf of lawmakers to improve
work efficiency and strengthen inter-party
solidarity.
President-elect Porfirio Lobo Sosa, who is
due to be sworn in on Wednesday, attended
the meeting.
Acting President Roberto Micheletti was
absent due to health reasons. According to
the interim government's spokesperson,
Micheletti is being treated for hypoglycemia
at a military hospital. He is said to be in
stable condition and expected to leave the
hospital this week.
On June 28, 2009, former President Manuel
Zelaya was ousted in a military coup and
Micheletti, the legislature leader at the
time, became interim president. The Honduran
Congress voted against the reinstatement of
Zelaya after Sosa won the presidential vote
on Nov. 29.
