Germany Foresees Improved Ties With Central America

SAN SALVADOR - Germany's ties with Central American nations will improve with the inauguration of a new president in Honduras, a senior German diplomat said Friday.

The inauguration of President Porfirio Lobo opens the path to normalize ties between Honduras and the European Union (EU) and the integration of that country to the international community, said Bernhard Graf von Waldersee, the German Foreign Ministry's general director for Latin America.

"We hope that all the cycle (in Honduras) is closed ... We expect that this new government opens the path of the reconciliation announced by President Lobo," said Graf von Waldersee, who is visiting El Salvador.

He said his country also watch closely the political and economic situation in El Salvador, and seeks to speed up cooperation with that country.

Germany will also work toward the conclusion of an association agreement between the EU and Central America, said the diplomat.
