Immigration To Place Sticker In Passports Of Foreigners With Special Status

Foreigners coming to Costa Rica to study, work or participate in academic activities (special status) will have a sticker placed in their passport beginning February 1, informed the Dirección de Migración y Extranjería (immigration service).

The sticker, specially printed with a high degree of security features, will include the name of the person, the nationality, date of birth, sex, passport number, the type of permit and the expiry date of the permit.

The sticke will also include the person's signature and very difficult to reproduce (falsify), unlike the current rubber stamp is placed on passports of those persons who are on a temporary permit, other than a tourist visa.

Mario Zamora, the director of Migración, explained that the printed stickers are within the specifications of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for passports and other travel documents.

Zamora said that cost of the system is greater than ¢100 million colones and is part of the immigration service systems of issuing passports and other documents.

The director said that some 16.000 foreigners "with special status" currently live in Costa Rica.
