Mayor Facing Criminal Trial
On Friday, the Juzgado Penal de Hacienda de
San José, ordered the mayor of Liberia,
Carlos Marín Muñoz, to
three months conditional bail while the Fiscalia continues its investigation of
criminal charges of dereliction of duty and
disobedience to authority.
Included in the conditions of bail are the
suspension of his duties, cannot leave Costa
Rica and cannot go near the Liberia
Municipal offices.
Marín was detained on Thursday and
transferred to the Goicoechea in San José to
face criminal charges that occurred in 2007
to 2009.
One of the accusations against the mayor is
for not obeying a Sala IV (Constitutional
Court) order to complete a series of public
works to avoid the flooding of the barrio La
Cruz, in Liberia. The court order was in
June 2009 and the work never carried out.
On Thursday the mayor of Aserrí (San José),
Mario Morales Guzmán, was sentenced to five
years prison for corruption and making false
declarations.
The mayor, in addition to serving his prison
term, will have to step down from his
current position and not be able to hold
public office for the next four years.
The trial was held at the Segundo Circuito
Judicial de San José, prompted the Tribunal
Penal de Hacienda and the Función Pública.
Along with Aserrí mayor, Juan Carlos Obando,
former head of the EBI company, was
sentenced to one year prison by the same
court for bribery and inciting corruption.
The court head testimony that Morales Guzmán
received some us$45.000 from Obando related
to a sanitary full located in El Huaso,
Aserrí,
