Venezuela Warns of Use
of Children in Protests
CARACAS - Venezuela's Attorney General Luisa
Ortega warned on Friday of the use of minors
in demonstrations causing a breach of peace,
referring to recent demonstrations involving
students.
Ortega said that the Ministry of Justice is
watching with great concern the use of
children and teens in demonstrations and
have opened an investigation to determine
whether school authorities have any
responsibility for this.
In her weekly radio program on Radio
Nacional de Venezuela, she recalled that the
investigation was opened in the wake of
reports by students, who say that school
authorities are inciting students to take
part in violent actions.
She said that the Law for the Protection of
Children and Teens envisages their right to
peaceful demonstration and the State has the
obligation to secure this group of the
population the enjoyment of their rights.
Regarding the deaths of two students on
Monday in demonstrations involving political
opposition in Merida state, Ortega said that
a multidisciplinary team is carrying out the
investigation.
The protests, considered by authorities as
part of a destabilizing plan, are using as a
pretext the closing of RCTV, a channel
excluded from cable service because of
violations of the telecommunications law. |
