Caldera
Re-Opening in "Veremos"
Although no
decision was
given on
Wednesday, the
ministro de Obra
Publica y
Transporte,
Francisco
Jimenez, hinted
that the 11
kilometres
between Orotina
and Atenas on
the San José -
Caldera, could
be re-opened by
the weekend.
The minister
said in a press
conference that
they are still
evaluating the
technical and
engineering
reports to
determine if the
work is advanced
far enough to
re-open the
section of the
highway that has
been closed
since June 12th.
The minister
said he was
conscious the
need for the
re-opening of
the highway with
the start of the
mid-year school
break and
vacation season,
but would not
rush any
decision or
place the public
at risk.
Jimenez
explained that
there are two
main points were
the risk is
being assessed
and that
although the
highway is
re-opened, it is
normal for work
on the road to
continue.
This weekend
some 400.000
vehicles are
expected to be
on the road
heading out of
San José for the
beaches and
resorts, the
majority heading
for the Pacific
coast and the
need for the
re-opening of
the highway.
