Car Thefts Down
In San José,
Thieves Set
Sights On
Guanacaste
The Organismo
Investigación
Judicial (OIJ)
seems to have
won the fight
against vehicle
thefts in San
José, but now is
becoming the new
threat in
Guanacaste.
According to the
OIJ, this week
they struck hard
on card thieves,
stopping 6
robberies in
progress in only
20 hours on
Monday,
capturing a gang
of car thieves
that operated
out of Pavas and
La Carpio, where
the vehicles
were stripped
and resold for
parts.
The OIJ says
they have
detained 174 car
thieves this
year, half of
which are now
behind bars.
Police records
indicate that
the majority had
long criminal
records.
The OIJ admits
that their
efforts to curb
car theft in San
José has worked,
but that the
criminals are
moving on to new
territory,
primarily
Guanacaste.
The authorities
say that many of
the car thefts
are the neglect
and carelessness
of the owners.
Statistics show
that of the 52
car thefts in
June, 35 were
due to owner
neglect and only
17 to "bajonazos"
(gunpoint). For
the year, of the
320 vehicle
thefts, 210 were
due to
carelessness and
110 to bajonazos.
