Seismic Swarm Shakes And Rolls Costa Rica

Wednesday was a very active day seismic wise, as more than 30 tremors shook Costa Rica, the majority due to a seismic swarm* in the Irazú volcano.

The first registered tremor was at 1:45pm registering 4.0 on the Richter scale, with an epicentre some 25 kilometres northwest of Quepos, with a depth of 58 kilometres.

The tremors were felt in many areas.

At the end of the seismic swarm a total of 32 tremors were registered, but only 2 of the shakes were felt.

*The seismic phenomenon known as a "seismic swarm" is an episode of high earthquake activity in which the largest earthquake does not occur at the beginning of the episode and in which the largest earthquake is not substantially larger than other earthquakes of the episode.
