Argentina: Trial Of Ex Oppressors Begins

BUENOS AIRES - The most important trial in Argentina after that of the members of the Military Junta begins Friday in Cordoba, with the cases of former oppressors Jorge Rafael Videla and Luciano Benjamin Menendez. Videla, Menendez, and 23 other defendants must answer for the execution of 29 political prisoners held in San Martin Penitentiary between April and October 1976.

The prisoners, who had been detained prior to the March 24, 1976 coup for having violated Anti-Subversion Law 20 840, were executed by their oppressors, who claimed they were plotting to escape from prison.

"The complicity with State terrorism will be evident" in this new trial for crimes against humanity, stated federal prosecutor Carlos Gonela, who is heading the case along with Maximiliano Hairabedian.

According to the Telam news agency, more than 60 witnesses will testify in this trial, requiring deliberations of no less than four months.
