Bolivia: German to be Tried
for Arms Possession
LA PAZ - Bolivian Minister of
Government Sacha Llorenti announced that a
German citizen, Dirk Smith, arrested in
Santa Cruz with a weapons stockpile, will be
placed on trial, it was reported here
Friday.
According to the state-owned Agencia
Boliviana de Informacion, Llorenti said
Smith also had posed as a Bolivian official.
Smith, 49, and an alleged former
intelligence agent, was sent Thursday to the
Palmasola prison in Santa Cruz, charged with
armed rebellion, criminal conspiracy and
sedition.
More than seven heavy-caliber weapons,
including shotguns and rifles, two pistols,
more than 300 projectiles, telescopic sights
and a camera were found in his Smith's room.
The German said he used the shotguns and
rifles to hunt wild animals and never
