Launches

Aerospace
Development
Costa Rica
launched its
national
aerospace
development
program, which
includes the
creation of the
Cámara
Centroamericana
de la Industria
Aeroespacial (CAIA)
- Central
Chamber of
Aerospace
Industries -
informed the
Foreign
Ministry.
Presidenta,
Laura
Chinchilla, met
on Friday with
businessmen,
academics and
diplomats in the
city of Liberia,
at the premises
of the Ad Astra
Rocket, former
Costa Rican
astronaut
Franklin Chang
for explain the
scope of the
project.
The Government,
with the help of
Chang, plans to
promote the
aerospace
industry in
Central America.
Currently, Chang
and his team
developed in
Liberia a new
plasma engine
that would
shorten the time
of flight of a
spacecraft,
which will be
tested on the
International
Space Station.
Experts and
representatives
of Governments
of Central
America,
Dominican
Republic, United
States, China
and India,
participated in
a workshop on
opportunities
for the region
in this industry
as well as
methods of
funding and the
progress of
research on
plasm energy,
said an official
statement.
According to
Costa Rica's
Foreign Minister
René Castro, in
Central America
there are 80
companies that
could
participate in
the development
of space
technology.
Castro added
that a decree
creating the
Comisión
Nacional de la
Industria
Aeroespacial to
define a
national policy
in this area
along with
academia and
private
companies, is
soon to be
signed.
