Former Guatemalan President
Could be Sued for Oil Deal
GUATEMALA - Lawsuits announced by
environmentalists and other prominent
individuals related to an oil contract in an
area of the Mayan biosphere could include
one against Oscar Berger, who was president
from 2004 to 2008.
The independent parliament member Anibal
Garcia said he was considering suing Berger
for changing the hydrocarbon law at the
beginning of his term, damaging national
interests.
At the time, Berger expanded an oil contract
with French transnational PERENCO. This was
repeated by the administration of Alvaro
Colom, which followed Berger's, for another
15 years.
According to the legislator, in 2004 the
Energy and Mining Ministry abolished article
222 of that norm, which regulated the
entity's unrecoverable costs and took them
to article 119, where recoverable ones were
set.
It is a submissive, shameless policy
benefiting international capital, the
CERIGUA agency quoted Garcia as saying. |
