Honduras to Assess Bunker
Fuel Leak
TEGUCIGALPA - A Honduran congressional
commission traveled to the southern
department of Valle to assess the
environmental impact of a bunker fuel leak
in San Lorenzo Bay.
The leak from a Luz y Fuerza S.A (Lufussa)
company oil pipeline a week ago has polluted
2.5 km of mangroves, a protected area.
The National Resource and Environment Office
(SERNA) said the leak in San Lorenzo Bay and
Golfo de Fonseca everglades was not
catastrophic, but did cause moderate damage
to areas sheltering endangered species.
The agency ruled out initial reports of
possible sabotage at the plant.
If there were sabotage, the company must
assume the blame and pay compensation to the
people in San Lorenzo, said Legislator
Augusto Cruz Assensio, head of the
congressional environmental commission. |
