Get Ready To Talk Sex

Don't panic if the knock on the door is to ask about your sexual preferences, if you use protection or not to have sex with your partner or if you have a steady partner. No, these are not the questions of a sexual deviant at your doorstep, but rather of Health Ministry (ministerio de Salud) officials who today begin a national survey of the sexual and reproductive health in the country.

The purpose of the study is to have first hand information that will be used for planning health programs with respect to sexuality and reproduction.

Ana Morice, the viceministra de Salud, said that the purpose of the study is to learn more about the sexual lives and health consciousness of Costa Ricans, that will be taken into account in the decision making process related to sexual health issues.

The study is to take in the responses of 4.800 people between the ages of 15 and 80.

This is also the first time that the sexual preferences of older adults are taken into account, with focus on the sexuality in the aging society.

Since the subject of sex is a sensitive issue for most people, the study will be done on a one-to-one basis. The surveyors will be asking questions in private to elicit an honest response, as false or misleading information with a child or parent present during the interview, will affect the outcome of the study. No telephone surveys will be conducted, according to the ministerio de Salud.

However, Salud officials are warning that people should not answer the door to anyone without first ensuring that the person is truly a Salud official.

ViceministraMorice said that interviewers will be wearing a blue t-shirt with the official logo of the minsiterio de Salud and will have photo ID.

The viceministra added that all information is confidential and only be used in the study.
