Hike Boomeranged on Colombian Candidate
BOGOTA - Colombian presidential
candidate of the ruling Party of National
Unity, Juan Manuel Santos, said on Monday
that his rival of the Green Party Antanas
Mockus made a mistake by proposing a tax
increase.
In his opinion, Mockus' presentation and his
erratic and unsuitable comments were
detrimental to him on the first round of
elections because though he managed to go to
the second round on June 20 he was left well
behind former Defense Minister Santos.
Santos said that perseverance in TV
broadcast presidential debates prior to the
polls held on Sunday were a crucial factor,
though he admitted that he was not hoping
for such a comfortable result.
Pre-electoral polls indicated a technical
tie in vote intention between Santos and
Mockus, but the first got 46.56 of valid
votes against the latter's 21.49 after votes
in 99.71 percent of electoral polling
stations were counted. |
