Guatemalan Government Seals Streets Around Sinkhole

GUATEMALA - The Guatemalan government has sealed the streets around a huge sinkhole in Guatemala City caused by the weekend's intense flooding from Tropical Storm Agatha, according to news reaching here Wednesday.

The Civilian National Police and the army had cordoned off a 100-meter evacuation zone around the hole, the National Coordinating Committee for the Disaster Reduction (Conred) said in a report Tuesday.

The sinkhole formed Saturday and swallowed a three-storey building. No casualties were reported from the hole, which was 21 meters in diameter and 31 meters deep, at the crossroads of 11th Avenue and 6th street, in the Ciudad Nueva section of the city.

Conred staff estimated that close to 7,900 cubic meters of material fell into the sinkhole, triggering an evacuation of the area.
