Laura: Firm and
Honest

It's a
new era for
Costa Ricans
moving forward.
A short while
ago, Costa Rica
became 1 of 13
countries being
led by female
leadership.
Laura Chinchilla
has promised to
stick with the
Arias directives
however improve
on them.
Female leaders
are few and far
between. Of the
195 countries in
the world, only
13 currently
have female
leadership.
That's a
whopping 6.66%.
Ummm...purely
coincidental I'm
sure. Anyways
the point is,
for some reason
women tend to
lean in the
direction of
community rather
than power like
men. Little
known fact: to
date there has
never been a
woman dictator.
(some might
argue Cleopatra)
The overall
feeling
throughout Costa
Rican since
Chinchilla being
elected is one
of cautious
belief. They've
heard all the
rhetoric before
but one drastic
difference is,
they can not
ignore the fact
that this time
their country is
being led by a
woman and
everyone knows,
"Men are from
Mars; Women are
from Venus".
President
Chinchilla has
shown how firm
she can be when
she vetoed the
salary increase
by the
unicameral
congress that
would have risen
to about $8,400
a month under a
bill given
preliminary
approval. The
60% pay raise
for the Costa
Rica congress
members went
over like a lead
balloon and
Chinchilla
quickly put an
end to the
fiasco with her
veto.
Chinchilla also
vowed to
implement a 5%
tax on online
gambling and
casinos in hopes
of offsetting
the GDP by 1%.
This has been
tried before and
failed. Will
Chinchilla
succeed? Time
will tell.
President
Chinchilla
continues with
her campaign
promise to
increase funding
towards crime in
Costa Rica
however in order
to do so, she
must find other
sources of
revenue to
support this.
IE: 5% gambling
tax
Her first day in
office, May 8,
2010, Chinchilla
created the
National
Anti-Drug
Commission to
combat drug
trafficking and
reduce the
overall
consumption of
illegal
substances in
Costa Rica.
One battle long
fought
throughout Latin
America is the
plight of the
gay and lesbian
community who
are looking for
fair and equal
treatment and
rights alongside
the majority,
"straight" or
heterosexual
community. With
a primary focus
on gay
marriages, it
would appear
that they've
suffered a blow
when Chinchilla
was elected for
she has
expressed
openly, her
standpoint on
the subject:
OPPOSED!
This standpoint
is equally
shared in
regards to
abortion.
Remember,
President
Chinchilla ran
on the slogan
“Laura: Firme y
Honesta”. She's
certainly living
up to that
slogan.
