Argentina, Uruguay Hold Airspace Control Exercises

BUENOS AIRES - Argentina and Uruguay started on Wednesday a series of joint exercises aimed to test their airspace control capabilities in border zones.

"We seek to establish a coordinated air activity control system that allows transfer of information in time of the irregular traffic in the airspace of both countries," Argentine military sources told Xinhua.

Uruguayan aircraft involved in the three-day "Rio III" exercises include three Cessna 206s, one Baron, three Cessna A-37, three Pucara, three Pilatus 7, and a search-and-rescue helicopter, said the sources.

Argentine planes that take part in the exercises include a Twin Otter, a Seneca and a Dakota, and a Bell L-212.

Radar and other air defense detection methods will also be used in the exercises, which runs through Friday.
