From UN Post
Avoiding
embarrassing the
new
administration
of Laura
Chinchilla may
have been the
motive behind
the quick
resignation of
former
Foreign Minister
Bruno Stagno
after it was
learned that he
had
self-assigned
himself the post of Costa
Rican Ambassador
to the United
Nations.
Facing criticism
generated by the
self-appointment,
Stagno was quick
to tender
presidenta
Chinchilla his
resignation on
Wednesday.
A Casa
Presidential
press release
said the
Stagno
resignation
letter presented
and accepted by
presidenta
Chinchilla was
irrevocable.
A few days
before turning
over his post to
Rene Castro,
Chinchilla's
appointed
Foreign
Minister, Stagno
appointed
himself Costa
Rica's
ambassador to
the UN, an
action
questioned by
the local media
and government
authorities.
Few days before
leaving his post
as foreign
minister of the
previous
government, he
appointed
himself as Costa
Rican
Ambassador to
the UN, an
action
extensively
questioned by
the local media
and the Office
of Attorney
Ethics.
That authority
suggested the
need for an
investigation
about a supposed
violation of the
integrity and
honesty of
Stagno.
With his
resignation,
Stagno is trying
to soothe the
avalanche of
criticism
against the
government of
Chinchilla, who
supported his
post before the
UN and creation
of an
non-existent
post for the ex
ambassador to
that
international
organization,
Jorge Urbina.
In order to
occupy his
country's
embassy in New
York, Stagno
transferred
Urbina to a
representation
that does not
exist:
ambassador to
the multilateral
authorities in
the United
Kingdom of the
Netherlands.
Both decisions
were supported
by outgoing
president, Oscar
Arias and
the new
president.
