Former Rebels Occupy Nicaragua's Airport

MANAGUA - Former combatants of the rebel Yatama group Friday occupied an international airport in northern Nicaragua, demanding fulfillment of an agreement they signed with the government a week ago.

The occupation of Rigoberto Cabezas Airport in Bilwi municipality has caused the suspension of flights to the capital of Managua 557 km away.

The group had also blocked the route between Minas and Waspan municipalities, Yatama natives leader Hector Poveda said.

Yatama is an indigenous group in the North Atlantic Autonomous Region. The Nicaraguan government officials signed an agreement last week promising loans, houses, construction materials and jobs to the former fighters.

Poveda said the group would occupy other State buildings in Bilwi if the government did not fulfill their demands.

Poveda said he led 3,810 former Yatama combatants, who were also demanding roofs for their houses, which were damaged in 2007 by hurricane Felix.

Meanwhile, four legislators of the National Assembly are stranded in Bilwi and have requested the National Army to help them return to Managua.
