Central American Bank Approves Credit For Storm-Hit Countries

TEGUCIGALPA - The Central American Bank of Economic Integration (CBEI) on Friday announced a credit of 750,000 U.S. dollars to aid Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, which were affected by the tropical storm Agatha.

The CBEI said in a statement that due to the magnitude of the disaster "the CBEI must be ready to collaborate immediately to solve the problems generated by this catastrophe."

The CBEI said each of the three countries will receive 250,000 dollars.

The statement added that CBEI President Nick Rischbieth has requested the board to consider this financial aid as non-repayable.

The three governments have to present a report in six months about the use of the resources and the obtained results.

Guatemala was the worst hit country, where at least 158 people died and 151 others were missing. El Salvador reported nine deaths and Honduras 18 with huge property damage.
