Over 700 Assaults in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA - The Committee of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared in Honduras (COFADEH) denounced more than 700 politically motivated attacks countrywide since January 30 this year.

The document was released by Mary Agurcia, a COFADEH leader, at the conference of the Honduran Human Rights Platform held in the headquarters of the organization of Women in Arts.

According to Agurcia, after Porfirio Lobo took office 12 murders for political reasons, two attacks, 63 death threats, 76 intimidation and persecution and 53 arrests.

In spite of reports presented to the Public Prosecutor's Office, almost all of these cases remain unpunished.

The document also shows the attacks against media saff opposed to the coup of June 28.

According to the document, so far this year six journalists have been murdered, 15 threatened, three had to leave the country and a local radio station was closed.

COFADEH also reported several cases of burglaries, sexual assaults, torture and kidnapping.

Zelaya, who is in the Dominican Republic at present, ruled out the possibility of returning to Honduras for the lack of guarantees for the respect of his rights.

The Committee of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared in Honduras regretted the impunity in the country and the appointment of military officers in charge of civil institutions.
