Possible
Tránsito Strike
On Monday
The work to rule actions of the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) of
the past five
days could
escalate to full
out strike
action if the
government
doesn't step in
and make good on
its agreement to
increase the
salary of the
Tránsitos
(traffic
officials).
Joselito Ureña,
head of the
Unión Nacional
de Técnicos y
Profesionales en
Tránsito (Unateprot)
- Tránsito's
union - the
government had
promised to pay
the salary
adjustment by
the end of May
2010.
"All we ask is
an exact date of
payment, wheen
the officers can
put in their ATM
card and the
money appears",
said Ureña.
The union head
added that the
only way to
avoid a full out
strike action is
for the
government to
commit, on
paper, when
payment will be
made.
Ureña, whose
union represents
98% of the 900
Tránsito police
force, is asking
for a firm
commitment by
the ministerios
de Trabajo y de
Tranportes y
Obras Públicas (labour
and
transportation
ministries) to
the Unateprot
and the
Asociación
Nacional de
Empelados
Públicos (Anep)
unions.
César Quirós,
director of the
Policía de
Tránsito, denied
that the
officers are
being overlooked
and along with
minister Jiménez,
says they are
working on a
solution.
