Shrek Glasses In Costa Rica Not Toxic, Local McDonalds Operator Says

The McDonald’s Shrek glass recall because the paint on the cups contains cadmium, a toxic metal, will not affect Costa Rica, says the country's operator of the McDonalds chain of restaurants.

This week over 10 million drinking glasses that were sold at McDonald’s were found to have cadmium in the paint that creates the “Shrek” designs on the glasses.

As a promotion for the new “Shrek Forever After” movie, McDonald’s began selling the glasses in the United States for about $2 each. The glasses were to be highly popular as a collectible since this Shrek movie is advertised as being the final movie being made about the character by DreamWorks. Now with the recall, these glasses could become even more highly collectible since they will no longer be sold at McDonald’s.

Although no glasses were sold in Latin America because the Shrek movie premieres at the end of the month, they are avaialble in Costa Rica, but not manufactured by the same process as the glasses sold in the U.S.

Edgar Muñoz, general manger of Arcos Dorados Costa Rica, made the announcement on Friday.

María Luisa Ávila, ministra de Salud, said that she has not received any warning and the glasses are not comupulsory registratrion with the Health ministry, but in an irregular situation, her officials would act and confiscate if necessary for public health concerns.
