Oil Slick at Venezuelan
Maracaibo Lake under Investigation

Company investigate the origin of an oil
slick in the waters of Maracaibo Lake, in
the western part of the country, Panorama
regional daily reported on Friday.
A commission of the Institute for the
Maracaibo Lake Conservation completes the
investigation team, who apart from analyzing
the problem, has started to recollect
material in the shores of the lake.
Deputy and member of the National Assembly's
Environment Commission Earle Herrera said
that even they had not received any
denunciation, they would create a group to
travel to Zulia State in order to inspect
the area.
According to Panorama daily, the oil slick
caused alarm in the fishing zones of La
Vereda, near General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge,
and El Bajo, in San Francisco municipality.
The newspaper quoted preliminary versions as
saying that the oil slick can result from
fuel leak of any ship, or even worse, the
breaking off of an oil pipeline in that
area.
Fishermen in the area expressed concern for
the oil slick, which forces them to clean up
the boats and fishing nets and caused the
fish migration.
