Uses Facebook To
Rid Their Barrio
Of Transvestites
And Prostitution
A group of
citizens in
Alajuela
concerned of the
proliferation of
transvestites
invading their
neighbouroods
providing sex to
customers on the
streets, is
using Facebook
to fight back.

the streets of
their barrio
The group,
calling
themselves,
Vigilantes de
Costa Rica",
says its main
mission is to
rid their
streets of
prostitution and
using the social
media with a
record 714.360
registered users
in Costa Rica,
they are
uploading photos
and videos of
the vehicles,
including the
plate number, of
those stopping
to buy street
side sex from
the "travestis".
The group has
also, on
occasion,
published the
name of the
registered owner
of the vehicle,
all to embarrass
the people
involved in the
purchase of
sexual services
and to alarm
others from
taking doing so.
The group is
made of up some
60 residents of
the barrio "Corazón
de Jesús de
Alajuela",
located some 500
metres north of
the city's
central park.
Making up the
group are
housewives,
pensioners,
youths and
professionals,
all coming
together in the
same caus.
The group
assures that
their main goal
is to rid their
barrio of the
transvestites
and prostitution
they have
brought to the
area.
Many in the
barrio have
complained of
the men having
sex in the open
street and the
threats of
violence of the
transvestites.
