World Environment Day Marked
in Cuba
HAVANA - Cuba Saturday marked World
Environment Day (WED) by organizing all over
the country events to raise public awareness
about the deterioration of the global
environment and the importance of stopping
this process.
Cuba has a National System of Protected
Areas, which covers more than 260 important
natural areas, carefully preserved and well
cared for by the National Center for
Protected Areas of the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Environment.
Also as a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol,
Cuba maintains a strict adherence to the
compliance of the agreements to reduce the
consumption of substances depleting the
ozone layer, and increases the production of
clean energy and the designing of programs
to face the change climate.
Cuba reduced in 2009 its pollution load of
organic origin by 2.6 percent compared to
the previous year.
It also increased the cleaning of the bays,
particularly emphasizing the recovery of
water quality, specially in the harbor of
Havana, where it is possible to observe the
increasing return of flora and fauna.
This National Environmental Policy began
almost from the victory in 1959 of the
government headed by Fidel Castro, an
outspoken defender of nature and ecology.
