Severe Losses in Agriculture
SAN SALVADOR - The tropical storm Agatha
left losses of more than six million dollars
in the agricultural sector in El Salvador,
according to Minister of Agriculture and
Livestock, Guillermo Loóez.
Preliminary studies indicate that rains and
winds over the weekend caused damage in the
agricultural infrastructure of about $ three
million, and crop losses by a similar value,
explained the Minister.
According to López, nearly 30 percent of
crops were affected by the rainfall.
The most affected crops were corn, rice,
vegetables, and sugar cane, he said.
Agatha also left here 11 dead, two missing,
and damage to road infrastructure of $ 20
million.
Civil Protection Director Jorge Melendez
said that more than 120 000 people were
affected by the rains, due to damages to
their homes, loss of crops or having to
leave their economic activities such as
fishing, trade, and tourism, among others.
