El Salvador: Agatha Left Severe Losses in Agriculture

SAN SALVADOR - The tropical storm Agatha left losses of more than six million dollars in the agricultural sector in El Salvador, according to Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Guillermo Loóez.

Preliminary studies indicate that rains and winds over the weekend caused damage in the agricultural infrastructure of about $ three million, and crop losses by a similar value, explained the Minister.

According to López, nearly 30 percent of crops were affected by the rainfall.

The most affected crops were corn, rice, vegetables, and sugar cane, he said.

Agatha also left here 11 dead, two missing, and damage to road infrastructure of $ 20 million.

Civil Protection Director Jorge Melendez said that more than 120 000 people were affected by the rains, due to damages to their homes, loss of crops or having to leave their economic activities such as fishing, trade, and tourism, among others.
