Assessment On Storm damage
continues in Guatemala
GUATEMALA - Guatemalan authorities continued
on Monday the assessment of the damage
caused by tropical storm Agatha, which also
left 172 dead.
However, the death toll could increase since
101 people are still missing with few hopes
to be found alive a week after the storm
pounded this Central American country.
According to estimates, given by President
Alvaro Colom, 344,814 people were affected
in some extend, 126,813 are at risk, and
98,339 are in shelters.
Material damage includes 1228 schools, while
another 144 are being used as shelters, so
it will be impossible to start classes again
on Monday as it was expected.
The distribution of humanitarian aid among
the Guatemalan victims is another of the
tasks given priority by the National
Coordinator for Disasters Reduction (CONRED).
However, heavy rains have hindered the
delivery of that humanitarian aid to several
communities, some of them with no access due
to flooding.
