Keep Suspension Of Honduras To The OAS Claimed

TEGUCIGALPA - Social organizations consider on Monday Honduras should continue suspended from the Organization of American States (OAS) and other mechanisms while human rights violations persists and the perpetrators of the coup are still unpunished.

"The crisis in Honduras since June 28 continues deepens, without any promising alternatives looming from the government sector to restore democratic institutions", said the Association of Judges for Democracy (AJD).

In a letter to OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza, the AJD pointed out that before accepting Honduras in the body, the State must admit its responsibility for crimes committed since the institutional breakdown.

The topic of the future of Honduras in the OAS was to be discussed at XL General Assembly being held in Lima, Peru, but today they gave up its inclusion in the agenda.

Honduras was suspended of the organization in July; just days after masked soldiers kidnapped President Manuel Zelaya and forcibly remove him from the country.

The AJD, the Committee of Relatives of Disappeared Detainees (COFADEH) and the Centre for Research and Promotion of Human Rights considered to reverse the situation is necessary to separate those who took part in the coup from their key positions in civilian institutions.

Only in January to date COFADEH registered more than 700 politically motivated assaults and almost all remain unsolved.
