Gynecological
Exams For 1.500
Women In
Guanacaste
A total of
1.500 low income
women in
Guanacaste will
have access to
free
gynecological
exams,
ultrasound and
mammograms thanks
to a project for
early detection
offered by the Clínica San
Rafael Arcángel
in Liberia.
The objective is
to make timely
diagnosis of
breast cancer,
ovary, cervix
and uterus.
The project will
cost the clinic
us$72.000
dollars and will
run from three
to six months,
breaking down
the potential
patients into
three groups of
500 each.
According to
figures by the
Ministerio de
Salud (Health
Ministry) the
cumulative rate
of cervical
cancer incidence
in the
Guanacaste is
27.56%, the worst cantón
is La Cruz, near
the Nicaragua
border.
Walbin Sánchez,
director of the
clinic,
explained that
the project is
ambitious and
that women with
any abnormal
results will be
subject to
further studies.
