Colombian Army Destroys 775 Antipersonnel Mines

BOGOTA - The Colombian Army found and destroyed 775 antipersonnel mines, which allegedly were placed by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Meta department, the Army said on Monday.

According to a report published on Monday by the Army, the mines were found in a rural zone of Vistahermosa municipality, and they allegedly belong to the FARC squad of "Isaias Pardo."

"It was established to carry out a terrorist attack of great magnitude, by placing explosive devices in roads and access routes in this town, in order to affect the free development of general elections on June 20," the Army said.

In 2009 Colombia became the second country with the largest number of victims caused by antipersonnel mines just after Afghanistan.

Colombia has invested 80 million U.S. dollars for the coming four years to remove the mines in its territory and give the right assistance to the victims.

According to the Ground Mines Monitor organization, since 1999, the FARC in Colombia is one of the groups which have used more mines.
