Colom Urges to Investigate
Guatemalan Attorney General
GUATEMALA -
Guatemala's Public Ministry is considering a
request of President Alvaro Colom to
investigate serious accusations against that
ministry's head, Conrado Reyes.
Colom sent a letter to the Council of the
Public Ministry in order to open an
investigation on the accusations against
Reyes made by former director of the
International Commission against Impunity in
Guatemala (CICIG), Carlos Castresana.
The CICIG director, who resigned from his
post, called Colom to remove Reyes from his
responsability, saying that the attorney
general has commitments with illegal
organizations.
Castresana also accuses Reyes of reaching
agreements with lawyers linked to drug
trafficking to get that post, having a
corruption record, and contributing to the
deterioration of the CICIG work.
Reyes immediately called to a press
conference to deny those accusations and
challenged Castresana to prove his
accusations.
