Second Wave Of
AH1N1 Hits Costa

Confirms
The ministerio
de Salud (Health
Ministry) says
that the second
wave of the
AH1N1 flu virus
may be upon us,
already claiming
four lives in
the past weeks
in the Zona
Norte (Northern
Zone), the
latest victim an
eight year old
girl.
Dr. Guiselle
Guzmán explained
that the little
girl was
admitted to the
San Carlos
hospital in an
advanced state
of infection of
the virus and
although she was
in the high risk
group, suffering
from cerebral
palsy, she was
never
vaccinated.
The doctor said
that the little
girl was
infected by a
brother at Pital
de San Carlos
school, where
there is an
outbreak of the
AH1N1 virus.
Earlier this
week a 59 year
old man, a
resident of
Florencia de San
Carlos, who
suffered from
diabetes,
hypertension and
a high level of
cholesterol,
died from the
AH1N1, confirmed
the vice-ministra
de Salud, Ana
Morice.
The number of
deaths to the
AH1N1 this year
is now at 12 and
a total of 64
since the virus
first hit Costa
Rica last year.
The ministerio
de Salud and the
Caja de Seguro
report that
there 20 persons
currently in
hosptila being
treated for the
AH1N1, six of
which are in the
San Carlos
hospital alone.
San Carlos is
leads with
number of cases
of the AH1N1 in
Costa Rica.
Rosa Climent,
the medical
director of the
Caja de Seguro,
said that a
specialized team
is being sent to
the San Carlos
area to beef up
attention in the
area, which
includes going
door to door and
visiting area
schools to
identify those
in the high risk
group and to
provide
information on
way to prevent
the spread of
the virus.
Others areas of
attention are
Esparza in
Puntarenas and
San Rafael de
Heredia, where
the virus is
attacking
children who
previously were
not affected.
Salud officials
remind to get
medical
attention in
case of a fever,
couch, sore
throat, nasal
secretion and
muscular pain
and the most
effective way to
prevent being
infected is to
continually wash
hands and
disinfect with
alcohol before
touching the
face, mouth or
eyes.
