U.S. Reaffirms Security Ties
With Colombia
BOGOTA - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton said here Wednesday that her country
will continue to be Colombia's "partner"on
security.
"Colombia is a partner we value, and we hope
being able to deepen and expand our
alliance," Clinton said during a meeting
with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.
"Colombia is a very active member on energy
and climate change issues in the region,
which are the examples of what we want to
encourage others to do."
Both sides also discussed bilateral military
cooperation, which has been strongly opposed
by Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia.
An agreement was inked during the meeting to
facilitate U.S. support for Colombia's
scientific innovation, and to boost
technological cooperation.
Clinton held a separate meeting with
Colombia's opposition presidential candidate
Antanas Mockus and expressed support for the
latter's proposal about anti-drug strategies
based on culture and legislation.
