US Resumes Deportation of
Guatemalans
GUATEMALA - At least four flights are
scheduled for Thursday and Friday to deport
Guatemalan immigrants, a process which had
been halted because of natural disasters in
their homeland.
According to Guatemalan immigration
authorities, U.S. deportations resumed on
Thursday, with 268 nationals arriving in
Guatemala on Thursday and 132 on Wednesday.
With those last two groups, a total of
10,535 Guatemalans have been deported for
not having legal status as immigrants in the
United States.
Deportations were halted after the eruption
of the Pacaya volcano on May 27, and the
almost simultaneous occurrence of Tropical
Storm Agatha.
The Guatemalan government asked the United
States to grant "temporary protected status"
(TPS) to undocumented Guatemalans after the
emergency and damages caused by those
phenomena.
The TPS is a temporary immigration status
for citizens living in a country when their
native country is facing a crisis such as
disaster or conflict, but it can take weeks
or even months to be approved.
