empty lots
littered with
trash that could
be a breeding
ground for
Dengue carrying
mosquito, could
cost the owner
of the land
dearly, as the
ministerio de
Salud, working
with
municipalities,
is taking action
to clean up the
lot and pass on
the cost.
The ministra de
Salud, María
Luisa Ávila,
explained that
municipal
officials will
first notify the
owner of the
land to clean
up, failing it
will take action
and then send
the owner the
bill.
Besides empty
lots, the focus
of the clean up
will also be on
scrap and metal
yards, storage
areas what
include the
handling of used
tires and any
other type of
accumulation of
refuse that
serve as an
incubator for
dengue.
In addition to
the cost of the
clean up, land
owners will also
be fined
¢300.000 for not
obeying a
ministerio de
Salud order and
in the case of
an active
business, it
runs the risk of
being shut down
as well.
Ministra Ávila
added that the
she has asked
the help of the
Ministerio de
Educación
(Education
ministry) to ask
teachers to
teach students
how to seek out
potential
breeding sites
of dengue.
"Our children
are our best
ally", said
Ávila.
Currently there
6.500 cases of
dengue, 2 of
which are
hemorrhagic and
