College of Engineers Faces Off With Autopistas

The lines are drawn, each side is of the yellow line is digging in its heels, while the government analyzes the reports from both sides of the San José - Caldera.

The Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos (CFIA) - College of Architects and Engineers - is firm that the road is unsafe and charges that the concessionaire, Autopistas del Sol, is not being responsible is correcting the areas of high risk.

The CFIA remains firm and assures that the law empowers it to decide on issues related to engineering and architecture to be built in Costa Rica.

For its part, Autopistas says its position is to follow the recommendations by Casisa-Cano, responsible for the implementation of the project.

The safety of the highway has come to the forefront during the past several weeks following landslides and rock falls with the start of the rainy season.

Identified are 18 points of danger and major concern, 15 which have been fixed according to Autopistas, while continuing work on the other three.

However, the CFIA is calling on the government to shut down the highway until it is completely safe for drivers.

Presidenta Laura Chinchilla said earlier this week that she would not hesitate to close the highway if reports indicate that is the best for all.
