Nicaragua Opens New Power Plant

MANAGUA - Nicaragua has opened a new power plant with a generating capacity of 1,100 megawatts, built with the support of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).

The Solidaridad (Solidarity) power plant was inaugurated by President Daniel Ortega in the Nagarote municipality, Leon department, west of this capital, on Thursday evening.

The plant has 32 bunker-fueled engines of 1.7 MW of power each, supplied by the South Korean company Hyundai.

By virtue of the agreements signed as part of the ALBA, Cuban experts helped plan the new power plant, and subsequently provided technical advice for running it. They also helped train the Nicaraguan staff and technicians who operate the plant.

In a brief speech at the opening ceremony, attended by 115 plant workers and hundreds of residents of Nagarote, Ortega stressed the importance of the plant for the national electric system, and highlighted the support given by Venezuela and Cuba.
