Central American Power System Advances

PANAMA - The Central American Electrical Interconnection System (SIEPAC) is 90 percent completed, Panamanian sources said.

According to Panama's National Public Services Authority (ASEP), that mechanism is expected to begin operating by mid-2011.

With a cost of nearly $500 million, the project to lay 1,800 kilometers (about 1,118 miles) of power lines is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Andean Development Corporation (CAF).

Experts agree this work will benefit the region by facilitating sales operations among power generating and distributing companies.
