San José -
Caldera Closed
From Atenas To
Orotina!
The ministro de
Obras Publicas y
Transportes,
Francisco
Jiménez,
announced Friday
the closure of
the 11 kilometre
section of the
San José -vCaldera
between Atenas
and Orotina. The
indefinite
closure follows
the criteria set
out by the
technical staff
of the MOPT and
the report by
the Colegio
Federado de
Ingenieros y
Arquitectos (CFIA).
Jiménez
explained that
the measure is
necessary to
ensure public
safety and to
allow the
concessionaire,
Autopistas del
Sol, freedom of
mobility to
properly perform
y the
intervention on
the slopes and
avoid risks to
the users
traveling on the
road.
The minister
said that he
acknowledge the
work already
carried out by
Autopistas but
added that the
risk levels
continue to be
high.
Although it has
the legal right
to appeal the
decision,
Autopistas said
on Friday that
it will abide by
the decision and
will be
submitting a
detailed report
of the work done
and a schedule
for the
remaining.
Users of the San
José - Caldera
will have to
continue to pay
the tolls
between the
Sabana and
Atenas and Pozón
de orotina and
Caldera.
The closure will
take effect this
morning
(Saturday) at
9am. No
re-opening date
has been
announced.
While the road
closure in
effect, traffic
to and from San
José and
Caldera, Jacó,
Quepos and the
southern zone
will have use
the old road,
known as the
montes del
Aguacate to
Orotina and then
back on ruta 27.
Traffic to
Puntarenas can
use the ruta 1
by way of the
Cambronero.
The closure is
between
kilometres 37
and 48 and
represents 14%
of the total 80
kilometres of
the highway that
was officially
opened on
January 27,
2010.
