San José - Limón Highway On Alert

The other road under the watchful eyes of transport officials is the San José - Limón or Ruta 32, which has also suffered heavily this start of the rainy season, last month being shut down for almost two weeks due to mudslides and debris on the roadway.

The Ministro de Obras Públicas y Transportes, Francisco Jiménez, was firm in his comments on Friday, that he would not hesitate to shut down this road as well as he did with the San José - Caldera.

The section of the highway presenting problems and risk to drivers if known as the Braulio Carillo, the section between the Zurquí tunnel and Guápiles, as the road winds through the mountains of the national park and is the scene of constant mudslides and rock falls.

Drivers are used to the conditions of the road and the constant delays and blockages so there is no outcry like on the San José - Caldera.

For now minister Jiménez says the highway is on "yellow" alert.

"The road is totally under control and monitoring", said the minister.

If the highway is closed traffic will have to be detoured through Turrialba, a road that has many steep ups and downs as it winds sharply through the mountains and not suitable for heavy trucks.
