Inspection
Although the
cost of the
vehicular
inspection for a
passenger
vehicle is
almost ˘10.000
colones, for
more than half
of the vehicle
owners, the true
cost is close to
˘15.000, since
51.49% of
vehicles do not
pass Riteve on
first
inspection.
The actual cost
of the annual
inspection is
˘9.930 colones
and a second
inspection which
has to be done
within 30 days
of the first,
costs ˘4.400.
Some argue that
Riteve purposely
fails a large
number of
vehicles on
first inspection
to earn the
second
inspection fee.
However, Riteve
argues that is
not the case.
Fernando Mayorga,
general manager
of Riteve, says
that 38.8% of
the vehicles
pass the
inspection with
"leve" or
"minor" faults,
while only 8.54%
actually make it
through the
inspection line
without any
faults at all.
Items like
tinted windows
are a "leve",
while a battery
that is not
properly
anchored or a
seatbelt not
functioning are
"graves" or
"major" and
require a
correction.
Mayorga added
that severely
worn tires are
the most common
faults with
vehicles,
followed by
faulty or worn
brakes.
All vehicles are
to be inspected
annually, save
for taxis and
buses which is
twice a year,
with the month
of inspection
corresponding to
the last digit
of the vehicles
license plate. 1

Mayorga added
that only 47% of
the vehicles are
inspected in
their month of
inspection.
Riteve has
inspection
stations across
the country and
open from Monday
to Saturday,
usually between
7am and 9pm. A

For those
showing up
without an
appointment they
will have to
make line and
have their
vehicles
inspected if
there is space
and time.
Vehicles have to
be re-inspected
at the same
station of the
first
inspection,
which is only
checked for the
faults that led
to the failure.
The
re-inspection
has to be done
within 30 days,
after which a
new and complete
inspection and
complete fee is
required.
