Child Labour Scourge in
Panama
PANAMA - Panama is currently making big
efforts to eliminate child labour, since
over 110,000 children under 17 years old are
involved in the different forms of this
scourge.
According to the 2008 National Poll, 89,767
children were affected by this social
problem, while the Ministry of Work
estimated that another 24,000 joined this
illegal activity last year.
From that total, 57 percent of the cases are
found in rural areas, and 32 percent of them
are from indigenous communities.
Authorities sometimes face with landowners'
maneuvers, hiding the children to avoid
their detection.
Panama hopes to become the first Central
American country to eliminate the worst ways
of child labour by 2015, and to end with
this scourge by 2020.
