Canadian Woman Living In Garabito Kept Child Like An Animal

The Fiscalía de Garabito is investigating the case of a Canadian woman identified by her last name Kuckuck, suspected of abandonment and simple assault of a child following a raid by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) responding to complaints of neighbours.

The 50 year old woman has her residence and a local store called Surf City and is accused of keeping the four year child in an wooden enclosure, just like a caged animal.

The identification of the minor was not possible as no record of the child was found in the Registro Civil and believed to be the child of an indigenous family of the area, who are said to have gifted the child to the Canadian woman.

Records of the Patronato Nacional de la Infancia (PANI) - child welfare services - indicate that the woman had tried to adopt the child since 2006, but the adoption process was never started and the child remained in her possession since.

The criminal action against the women began in March of this year, according to the PANI press office, as neighbours complained to the child welfare agency that he was not interacting with other children of the area.

The charges filed against the woman, who despite her arrest is was set free by a judge, followed an inspection by the PANI at the end of last month.

The minor is now in the hands of the PANI and was found to have no signs of physical abuse or violence during a preliminary evaluation and will be held at a Puntarenas shelter where he will undergo further evaluations.
