Cubans in Nicaragua
Commemorate Maceo and Ché Births
MANAGUA - Cuban doctors and public health
specialists providing services in Nicaragua
commemorated the 165th anniversary of the
birth of Antonio Maceo and the 82nd
anniversary of the birth of Ernesto Ché
Guevara in this Central American nation
Monday.
The central activity was held early Monday
morning at the Ciudad Sandino
Ophthalmological Center, the biggest of four
facilities opened by the Vision Now program
in Nicaragua.
This activity included the presence of
Nicaraguan Public Health Minister Sonia
Castro, Nicaraguan doctor and deputy for the
National Workers Front (FNT) Gustavo Porras,
and Cuban Embassy business attaché Rene
Ceballo, together with other members of the
Cuban Embassy.
Representing the 180 Cuban public health
workers providing services in Nicaragua,
several dozen doctors and nurses and
technicians also were present.
Cuban pediatrician Acela Valdes read a
communiqué in which members of the Cuban
medical brigade ratified their desire to
continue carrying out their humanitarian
work for the health of the peoples of the
world.
"We reassert our commitment to our leaders,
our people and our families to keep fighting
against illness and death," the document
said, adding that the brigade members
condemned the US government blockade against
Cuba and demanded the release of the Cuban
Five from US prisons.
Doctor Vivian Chavez, head of the Ernesto
Ché Guevara Medical Brigade in Nicaragua,
told Prensa Latina that similar activities
were held in other centers where other
members of the brigade are now working.
